Frequently asked questions

What can you expect from a SHADES TOURS tour? The SHADES TOURS tours are not classical sightseeing tours, but serve the socio-political education of the participants. On the tours on Poverty & Homelessness e.g. you will see places that are related to homelessness, but some stations also use the symbolism in the cityscape. For example, a park bench can become a symbol for “How do homeless people get a bed?”. The tours usually run through the public space and do not involve a visit to a social facility. All the other tour topics apply the same strategy.

Follow this Google Maps link. You will recognize your guide by SHADES TOUR folder in his hands.  The tour takes place no matter the weather. Please check the weather forecast and dress appropriately.

You can book the tour by going to our booking page and entering your details in the form. Afterwards you will receive a confirmation email with the date and time of your booked tour. Thats it!

Yes, because honestly – who could explain such difficult issues better than people who have experienced it. So depending on the tour you chose, you will be guided by a homeless person, refugee or former addict.

This tour will be provided in English.

We recommend always to book the tour in advanced. Due to high volume of tourists it could happen that we need to exclude customers without a confirmed reservation
We would like to keep the quality standards high therefore only 15 people are allowed per tour guide!

We start all our tours very punctual! Please be at least 10 minutes before starting time at the meeting point

Please note: We do not wait for any person who arrives too late. We want to be fair to all our customers and can not wait for single individuals if the whole group is already there.

If you loose your group during the walk, it is nearly impossible to find them again due to so many groups and streets in the old town. We recommend always to stay close and focused! 🙂

We do not have any break during this tour due to short duration of only 2h.

Please make sure you go before the tour starts to the toilet. In case of emergency there are always public toilets or coffee houses on our way. Please let the guide know that you need to use a toilet.

There is a thin line between social education and voyeurism. However, we are repeatedly praised by participants and social workers for the balancing act. SHADES TOURS rejects social voyeurism, thus neither homeless people are on display, nor former beds of guides or other homeless people are shown. Our tours lead through the public space – and your guide will be the only homeless person you’ll see on that tour. All guides are employed by SHADES TOURS and are of course paid a salary.

Tickets are non-refundable. Re-Bookings are possible up to 3 days prior to the tour.

If you are questioning whether to take the tour - do not hesitate. We took the tour with our two daughters (15 and 20) and can't rave about it more. Robert told his incredible story, explained the European system and helped us to gain a new perspective and understanding of homelessness. Thank you for an incredible tour and opportunity!
Such a great perspective and insight into the Austrian welfare system along with a touch of a personal story! Will never view the homeless population the same way again - MUST DO!!
