What makes Dresden special
Dresden was the capital of Saxony and flourished under Augustus the Strong in the 18th century. Its baroque architecture and art collections earned it the name Florence on the Elbe.
Much of the centre was destroyed in February 1945 and has been carefully rebuilt, most famously the Frauenkirche. A local guide explains this history of loss and reconstruction.
