Vienna in winter is full of romantic possibilities! Besides the Christmas markets you can explore charming cafés, rooftop bars, and dreamy stargazing spots for your next winter date.
It’s officially Christmas market season. And Vienna’s Christmas markets are definitely among the most romantic things to do here in the Austrian capital. But that’s not all! Here are three romantic winter date ideas that don’t involve Christmas markets!
Vienna is the city of cafés and Viennese Melange, as well as many sweets. So even if this tip seems a little obvious, there are many different opportunities for coffee lovers.
Spread throughout the whole city, you can, of course, find the old classic coffee houses, which are decorated with stucco and tend to be rather chic. But newer and more modern cafés can also be a good location for a date, especially if you like unique coffee creations. Many modern cafés can be found in the 7th District, for example, which is a young district and not quite as pompous as the inner city district.

Modern Coffee Tips:
If you want a cozier atmosphere, Vienna offers some beautiful rooftop café/bar combinations.
You can either enjoy a hot chocolate while taking in the city lights or sip a cocktail surrounded by fairy lights and overlooking Vienna. This creates the perfect setting for a relaxed and trendy winter date. Especially on clear nights, you can see St. Stephen’s Cathedral glowing below, making the view even more magical. If you want to eat something with your drinks, you won’t have to miss out on the view, as Vienna also has rooftop restaurants.

What could be more romantic than gazing at the stars together? If you’re looking for a serene and dreamy date idea, star-gazing in Vienna is a wonderful choice.
During winter, the skies are often clear, making it perfect for admiring the stars. You can visit the Vienna Planetarium in the Prater for an impressive indoor experience where images of stars, planets, and galaxies are projected onto the ceiling to simulate the night sky. Or you can head to the Kahlenberg viewpoint on a clear night for a more natural, romantic setting with the real sky above and the city below you.
