Christmas at Schönbrunn Palace is something special. As dusk falls, the courtyard in front of the former imperial summer residence fills with the scent of cinnamon, roasted almonds and mulled wine. This is Vienna’s most imperial Christmas market, and on this tour you’ll experience it the way locals do.
Meet your host at the entrance to the Ehrenhof, the palace’s main courtyard. At 16:00 your evening starts at Gerstner, the former Imperial and Royal Court Confectioner. In a short, entertaining Apfelstrudel show you’ll see how a paper-thin strudel dough is stretched by hand and rolled into Vienna’s most famous dessert. Then you get to enjoy a slice with a hot drink.
Afterwards, your local host takes you out onto the Christmas market in front of the palace. Over the next 90 minutes you’ll hear about Viennese Christmas traditions, learn which stalls the locals actually go to, and taste your way through the market. No queuing at the busy stands: at two of our partner stalls your host picks up two mugs of Glühwein or Punsch and a seasonal bite for you, and the mug deposit is already taken care of.
The guided part ends at around 18:00. If you’ve added Imperial Lights, your evening continues in the palace grounds: wander through the illuminated light garden at your own pace and stay as long as you like, until it closes at 22:00.
