When people think of German Christmas markets, they think of these names: the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg with its red-and-white canopies, the Reiterlesmarkt in medieval Rothenburg and Dresden's Striezelmarkt, held since 1434 and named after the Striezel, the old word for Christmas stollen.
This trip connects them all. Between half-timbered houses, the scent of gingerbread and wooden pyramids from the Ore Mountains, you experience Christmas the way it looks in picture books. To finish, the train runs along the Elbe through Saxon Switzerland to Prague.

Pick-up at the airport and transfer to your hotel. First evening at the Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz.
Tip-based tour through the old town and a visit to the Residenz. In the evening a guide shows you the city's finest markets.
In just over an hour the ICE brings you to Nuremberg. A tip-based tour leads up to the Imperial Castle; in the evening the Christkindlesmarkt glows on the Hauptmarkt, with bratwurst in a bun and real Lebkuchen.
By regional train, changing in Steinach, to Rothenburg, where time seems to have stood still since the Middle Ages. You visit the German Christmas Museum and the Reiterlesmarkt between half-timbered houses and the town wall. Back to Nuremberg in the evening.
Train to Dresden. In the afternoon you stroll between the Frauenkirche, the Semperoper and the Zwinger; in the evening the gates open to the Striezelmarkt with the world's largest Ore Mountains step pyramid.
Visit to the Zwinger and its collections. Then an Advent tour with Dresden Christstollen and mulled wine, and time for the smaller markets of the old town.
The train follows the Elbe through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to Prague. A tip-based tour leads across Charles Bridge to Old Town Square, where the market glows beneath the towers of the Týn Church.
In the morning you visit Prague Castle high above the Vltava. Then transfer to the airport.
