Discover how vegan Vienna blends traditional Austrian flavors with modern plant-based cuisine, making the city a must-visit destination for vegan food lovers.
Austrian cuisine is renowned for its hearty, meat-based dishes. From the famous Wiener schnitzel to roasts and Brettljause, there are plenty of hot and cold options to choose from. But in recent years, Vegan Vienna has become a rising trend, turning the city into a true vegan hotspot. Not only do some restaurants offer vegan alternatives, but some restaurants and cafes specialize in meat-free food and only offer that.
Today, we would like to introduce you to a variety of vegan places in Vienna offering good vegan alternatives to Austrian classics orentirely vegan restaurants. Even if you’re not vegan, it’s worth trying these places and dishes!
The sausage stands are institutions in Vienna. A visit to one of these should definitely be on your to-do list. The classics are the Käsekrainer and the Bosner. Some sausage stands now offer a Bosner made from mushrooms or seitan. The spices and how they are served remain the same as the original, so you get a classic Viennese snack, just without the meat!
Our favourite Vegan Bosner is:
Klasse Hasse at Lerchenfelder Str. 103, 1070 Wien
Both the Viennese Melange and the Sachertorte are world-famous, traditionally made with milk and, in the case of the cake, eggs. If you want to avoid these or try something different, you can drink your coffee with oat or soy milk, for example, and order a cake that does not contain any animal products. Many cafes offer milk alternatives, but often at an extra charge.
Of course, we know where this is not the case.
Normal Café but no extra charge for vegan milk: Café IIN at Dornerpl. 10, 1170 Wien
Completely Vegan Café: Das Lazy at Währinger Str. 133, 1180 Wien

The great thing about fruit ice cream is that it is usually vegan, as it does not require milk. However, a few years ago, two sisters from Vienna set themselves the goal of producing vegan ice cream that was just as good as its dairy-based counterpart. This led to the creation of a chain that is now the favourite ice cream brand among many Viennese, even among those who don’t follow a vegan diet.

You don’t have to forego classics such as schnitzel, goose, or roast meat either, as they have been perfected in vegan form in the Austrian capital. Instead of meat, a wide variety of alternatives are used that aim to mimic its consistency and taste as closely as possible.

Vegan Restaurant: Landia at Ahornergasse 4, 1070 Wien
However, vegan food doesn’t have to imitate meat. Meat-free cuisine has its own unique and delicious dishes. The good news is that you can try it for yourself, because Vienna has two fully vegan supermarkets where you can stock up and try your hand at making vegan dishes.
